
Mario Molina was a brilliant scientist who made a profound impact on our understanding of the #environment and the threats facing our planet. He was a pioneer in the field of atmospheric chemistry and played a key role in uncovering the dangers of ozone depletion, which eventually led to the adoption of the Montreal Protocol.
Born in #Mexico City in 1943, Molina went on to study at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and later received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Irvine, where he began studying the chemistry of the earth’s atmosphere.
In the early 1970s, Molina and his colleague, Sherwood Rowland, began to investigate the effects of #chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) on the ozone layer. They discovered that CFCs, which were widely used in refrigerants and other industrial products, were causing the depletion of the ozone layer in the stratosphere. This groundbreaking research led to a widespread awareness of the dangers of CFCs and the need for international action to address the issue.
Molina’s work on ozone depletion earned him numerous awards and honors, including the #Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995, which he shared with Rowland and Paul Crutzen. He was the first Mexican-born scientist to receive a Nobel Prize in any field.
Throughout his career, Molina was a passionate advocate for #environmental_protection and the need for global action on #climate_change. He served on numerous advisory boards and scientific committees, and he continued to speak out about the dangers facing our planet until his death in 2020.
